Student Councils

The student reading councils of the Texas State Reading Association (TSRA) are a critical part of the foundation for the preparation of future reading professionals.

Guided by highly qualified and strongly committed faculty sponsors, these councils play a vital role as they collaborate with TSRA and the International Reading Association (IRA) to stimulate and promote research and new developments in reading. In addition, student reading councils are established to disseminate information about best literacy practices, advocate for the advancement of literacy through thoughtful deliberation of legislative issues, and collaborate with professional organizations, authors, and businesses to advance the cause of literacy.

Student reading councils provide many avenues for pre-service teachers to become involved in different real-world initiatives aimed at not only providing a valuable service to others (e.g., reading to children at the mall and tutoring struggling readers), but also enriching the quality of experiences provided by the universities’ educator preparation programs. The invaluable insights and increased sense of competence gained by these future educators will help them address some of the challenges they will face once they begin to teach. In addition, active involvement in student reading councils helps pre-service teachers appreciate the fact that they are part of a professional learning community that is committed to supporting them and their continued professional growth.
